Point Reyes Station is a quaint village located north of San Francisco on Highway 1, near Drakes Bay and the Point Reyes National Seashore. Owing its name to the railroad that ran through it for 59 years, Point Reyes Station today is a quiet town with several charming shops and restaurants. The town of Point Reyes Station is in Marin County, or what is called West Marin to locals, and is right where you turn off Highway 1 to the road that leads to the Point Reyes Lighthouse, which is inside the Point Reyes National Seashore. This enchanting part of northern California attracts visitors from around the world who come to experience the panorama of ocean vistas, wind swept beaches, thunderous breakers, forested ridges and open grasslands. The National Seashore comprises over 100 square miles and includes 72,000 acres of coastal wilderness. There are abundant recreational opportunities including 147 miles of hiking trails, kayaking, biking, beachcombing and backcountry campgrounds. Nearly fifty different marine mammals can be found here, as well as 45 percent of the bird species in North America. There are also guided tours and activities offered at the Seashore and the hike out to the lighthouse is a must see. Just a short distance from Point Reyes Station is the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which includes Muir Woods, Fort Point National Historic Site, Alcatraz Island and the Presido of San Francisco. And just an hour’s drive away is the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge and the exciting city of San Francisco.
